How to play

  1. 01

    Slide one way

Use the arrow keys or WASD. On a phone, swipe the board up, down, left, or right.

  2. 02

    Merge matching tiles

Two equal numbers that touch become one. Each merged tile adds its new value to your score.

  3. 03

    Reach 2048

Keep open cells while building from 2 upward. After reaching 2048, you can continue toward even larger tiles.

2048 rules

A game starts on a 4×4 board with two tiles. Every valid move adds a 2 or 4 to one empty cell: 2 appears 90% of the time and 4 appears 10%. A tile created by a merge cannot merge again during the same move. The game ends when the board has no empty cells and no horizontal or vertical matches. CLASSIC has no undo. Using undo switches that run to PRACTICE with unlimited undo, and each mode keeps a separate best score.

A simple high-score strategy

TIP 01

Anchor the largest tile

Keep your largest tile in one corner and arrange nearby tiles from large to small.

TIP 02

Favor three directions

Using three directions most of the time reduces the chance of pulling your largest tile out of its corner.

TIP 03

Treat space as a resource

Before taking an easy merge, check whether the next board will still have open cells. More space means more choices.

TIP 04

Clean up small tiles

Gather scattered 2s and 4s before they block the board. Small dead ends eventually trap your largest tiles.
