The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog, then circles back to ask why the dog looked so unimpressed. The dog yawns, closes one eye, and declines to comment.

How to test your typing speed

  1. 01

    Choose a time

The 15-second test is the default. Choose 30 seconds for a steadier result or 60 seconds for consistency.

  2. 02

    Start typing

Enter the first character in the text box. The timer starts automatically.

  3. 03

    Read your result

When time runs out, see your WPM, accuracy, errors, and personal best.

How are WPM and accuracy calculated?

The test compares each character you type with the character in the same position. WPM uses the common five-character word standard, so spaces and punctuation count toward the result.

METRIC 01

WPM

(correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Words Per Minute estimates how many standard five-character words you type in one minute.

METRIC 02

Accuracy

correct characters ÷ typed characters × 100

Typing faster with more errors lowers your accuracy.

METRIC 03

Errors

current characters that differ from the passage

Correcting a character with Backspace removes it from the current error count.

Which test length should you choose?

Longer tests reward a steady rhythm and accuracy more than a short burst. Personal bests stay separate for each duration.

15 SEC

Default test

Start without pressure and get a result right away.

30 SEC

Steadier result

Balance speed, accuracy, and focus over a longer run.

60 SEC

Consistency test

See how well you hold your pace for a full minute.

What is a good typing speed?

PlayMinute groups results into Warm-up, Steady, Fast, and Sprint. Your most useful benchmark is your previous result on the same device and test length.

50+ WPMFast typistFast
30+ WPMEveryday typingSteady

Keyboard, device, browser, and passage difficulty can change the result. The pace labels guide practice; they are not official percentiles.

How to type faster

TIP 01

Protect accuracy

Reduce errors before chasing speed. Consistent movement builds a faster rhythm.

TIP 02

Look ahead

Watch the next few characters instead of looking down at the keyboard.

TIP 03

Stay relaxed

Release tension in your shoulders, wrists, and fingers. Stop if typing feels uncomfortable.

TIP 04

Compare like with like

Use the same device and duration to see whether your typing is improving.

Frequently asked questions

Does the first character count?

Yes. The first entered character starts the timer and counts toward your result.

Why does WPM divide characters by five?

Typing tests use five characters as a standard word so results stay comparable even when passages contain words of different lengths.

Can I correct mistakes?

Yes. Use Backspace as needed. The final result uses the text left in the input box when time ends.

Where is my personal best stored?

It stays in this browser's localStorage, separated by language and duration. No account or installation is required.
